We also talk about "accepting" Jesus. Jesus does not need our acceptance. We need His!!! Thankfully He is ready to "receive" us by His grace, though we are undeserving. "Do you want to ask Jesus into your heart?" "Do you want to know Jesus?" "Do you know if you died right now that you would spend eternity in heaven?" What? WHAT! Asking Jesus into your heart?!?! What does that even mean and why would I do it in the first place? Do you want to know Jesus?!?! WHO DOESN'T!!! Of course I want to spend eternity in heaven, who wouldn't!!!! These questions are so inadequate and certainly don't seem to be derived from Scripture! When rightly understood from a biblical perspective, I believe that salvation is instantaneous, but we cannot leave new believers crawling around like newborn babes on a battlefiled. I am convinced that it is our job to disciple new believers to guard against "backsliding" and unregenerate believers. follow-up:

They miss real need for the atoning work of Jesus because the gravity of sin means nothing to them. "Getting saved" is nothing more than an existential experience; a warm fuzzy moral experience. Where do they get that idea? Certainly not from the Bible! Why? Because they don't read it and take its message seriously. So even if they don't read it at home you'd think, "oh well they'll get it at church" All too often, church leaders do not take the message seriously either. What has happened to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our lives!?!?! How could someone "backslide" if they truly took God's Word seriously? I'll get off my soapbox now.
