Waiting to Upgrade to Mac OS X Leopard

Mac OS X LeopardI have been slow in getting out updates to the site because I have been busy preparing for the release and my upgrade to the new version of the Macintosh operating system, Mac OS 10.5 (a.k.a. “Leopard”) which was released Friday, October 26. In an episode that feels much like something that kev from Special Kind of Stupid would relate, I have allowed my frugality to put me squarely behind the proverbial eight ball. You see, a copy of Leopard costs $129. But thankfully, being a defense contractor employee affords me a nice discount, bringing the price down to $107. But there is one catch. When you order a product from the online Apple store you are charged a sales tax. This would bring my total to $114. So I checked out my next favorite onlineLeopard Desktop shopping source, Amazon. Amazon was selling pre-order copies of Leopard for only $109 with free shipping. Cha-ching! I could save a whole five bucks.

This seemed like a good idea at the time. Until I realized that, unlike Apple store pre-orders, which would arrive on the date of release (Oct. 26), pre-ordering from Amazon meant that it would only ship on the 26th. Right now my tracking information states that my copy of the latest Mac cat should arrive on Tuesday, October 30th. So while my fellow Mac-ies (such as Ray W.) are enjoying their new OS, I am busy counting the hours. And I will be watching and re-watching the Guided Tour over at Apple’s website. I know. I feel that a quote from Toy Story is in order: “You are a sad, strange little man.”

Let’s hear it for “frugality”…boooo.

Josh H.

Update: There’s a hilarious article about the expectations and realities of both Leopard and Windows Vista over at RoughlyDrafted magazine.

    “Mac-ies”? I would have thought you might have said “Mac daddies”.

    I’m sure it’s amazing, but why does the branding have to look like Lisa Frank?

    @Leah: It obviously must be b/c Lisa Frank totally rocks.

    @Ray: You’re goin’ down.
