This (Birth)Day In History

Today is my birthday. I share a birthday with Mary Queen of Scots, Eli Whinety, Gregg Allman, Marty Friedman (of Megadeth), Sammy Davis Jr., Terri Hatcher, Phil Collen (of Def Leppard), and Sinead O’Connor. Here are some other things that happened on December 8th in history.

1776 George Washington’s retreating army crossed the Delaware River from New Jersey to Pennsylvania during the American Revolution.

1854 Pope Pius IX proclaimed the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which holds that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was free of original sin from the moment of her own conception.

1863 President Abraham Lincoln announced his plan for the Reconstruction of the South.

1886 The American Federation of Labor was founded in Columbus, Ohio.

1949 The Chinese Nationalist government moved from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan as the Communists pressed their attacks.

1978 Joshua Horne was born.

1980 Rock musician John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York City apartment building by Mark David Chapman. The former Beatle was 40.

1987 Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied territories began an intefadeh, or uprising.

1987 President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev signed a treaty calling for destruction of intermediate-range nuclear missiles.

1991 Russia, Belarus and Ukraine declared the Soviet national government dead, forging a new alliance, the Commonwealth of Independent States.

1992 Americans saw live TV coverage of U.S. troops landing on the beaches of Somalia as Operation Restore Hope began.

1993 President Bill Clinton signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement.

1995 The Grateful Dead announced they were breaking up after 30 years of making music. The news came four months after the death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia.

Happy birthday (again), my friend. Your party yesterday was a lot of fun.

I hope I’m as dignified as you when I turn 30.

So I have had two dreams with you in them in the last week.

DREAM #1: You and Lyndsay lived on Sheldon Street with your mom and Jake. There was a big party there–it was pretty fun. Jake lived in your room and you and Lyndsay shared his room.

DREAM #2: “We’re getting the band back together!” We had a big show we were going to play only problem is I had never practiced with you guys. We in the middle of the show I decided to take a walk. When I got back I learned that Ryan decided to do the same thing. Apparently you and Matthew did not seem to notice. I don’t quite know what that means. Anyhow, you had a sweet, pointy 80s style guitar. I had like a twelve string bass that I couldn’t even get my hand around.

    Weird, I know.

Anyhow, happy birthday. How appropriate that a Southern Rock legend and two 80s rock icons share your birthday. If there could just be a branch of music that emphasized spandex-laden Southern Rock. Sweet freakin’ action!!!

You forgot Jim Morrison of The Doors. It was also his birthday, so that gives you stinky leather pants guy.
    Happy Belated Birthday.
